
Pack Bests #25 VCU 5-2

RALEIGH, N.C. --- 41st-ranked NC State defeated 25th-ranked VCU 5-2 Saturday in Pullen Park, led by singles wins from #28 Sanaa Bhambri and #83 Sandhya Nagaraj, and a 2-0 afternoon from Tatiana Illova.
NC State (9-2, 1-1 ACC) won the doubles point with wins from Illova, Lenka Hojckova, Tanvi Shah, and Ashley Miller. The Pack’s 11th-ranked duo Bhambri and Nagaraj fell 8-5 in their match.
Illova and Hojckova teamed to knock off VCU’s number two team 8-1, while Shah and Miller won an 8-6 decision over Yakavleva/Pietzuch.
The Wolfpack won four of the six singles matches led by Bhambri’s 6-2, 6-2 win over Josefin Hjertquist and Nagaraj’s 6-2, 6-3 victory against Kateryna Yergina.
Illova finished as the Pack’s only 2-0 performer with her win over Ana Bara 6-2, 6-1. Joelle Kissell notched the Pack’s final singles win, 6-4, 6-1 over Olga Terteac.
Lenka Hojckova pushed VCU’s 107th-ranked Alex Bara to a third-set tiebreaker, but fell 6-2, 0-6, 1-0 (10-6).
Freshman Tanvi Shah played in the number six position for the second-straight match, but lost a close contest to Daria Yakavleva 7-5, 7-6 (7-3).
The defending CAA champion Rams represent the highest-ranked team that the Pack has defeated this season.
Next on the schedule, NC State battles 54th-ranked Wisconsin on Saturday, March 19th in Charleston, S.C. at 1:30 p.m.
