
Women's Golf Wins Lady Seahawk in Comeback Fashion

WALLACE, N.C. The NC State women’s golf team erased an eight-shot deficit to capture the team championship by a narrow one-stoke margin over UNC Greensboro at the 2008 UNCW Lady Seahawk Classic Tuesday at River Landing Golf Course.
The Wolfpack (305-300-291=896) matched its lowest round of the year with a final round three-over 291 to earn the program’s seventh team title and first since garnering the Papa John’s Collegiate (Feb. 19-21, 2006) in Miami Lakes, Fla.
Under cloudy skies and cool temperatures, UNCG (303-294-300=897) finished second on the Par 72, 6,183-yard layout. Host UNC Wilmington finished third at (305-295-300=900) and Campbell came in fourth at (296-302-304=902).
UNCW's Carmen Perez-Narbon edged UNCG's Erica Creed in the first playoff hole to earn medallist honors.
NC State senior Stephanie Derrey fired a 1-under 71 and junior Lauren Doughtie and sophomore Emily Street fashioned a pair of 73's to help NC State climb from fourth place after two rounds. Doughtie finished third overall with a score of +3 (76-70-73=219) and Derry wound up tied for fourth at +4 (74-75-71=220), her best career finish as a collegiate golfer.
Street posted a top-20 finish with a tie for 17th at +11 (76-78-73=227).
Joanna Saleeby fired a two-over 74 during the final round to finish up tied for 30th at +14 (79-77-74=230).
Cindel Gwyn finished 88th at +44 (87-88-85=260).
Playing as an individual, Kathleen Strandberg placed tied for 51st +18 (82-76-76=234).
Campbell raced out to a five-stroke lead after the opening round with an 8-over par 296 before UNCG rallied with a 10-under 294 for the second round lead.
