BATON ROUGE, La. NC State sophomore Lauren Doughtie fired a one-under-par 71 to lead the Wolfpack during first-day action at the NCAA Women’s East Regional at the par-72, 6,403-yard University Club.
NC State, which is making its sixth consecutive NCAA appearance, sits in 18th place at +14 (302) after 18 holes of the 54-hole tournament.
Doughtie got off to a great start with four birdies in the first six holes to stand at -3. She later added another birdie at the par-5 11th to move to -4 on her round. However, Doughtie fell all the way back to even par with two bogeys and a double bogey, but her sixth birdie of the day on the par-4 18th put her in a tie for 16th with her second sub-par round of the year.
Freshman Emily Street continued her steady play with a four-over 76. After eight straight pars to open her round, Street bogeyed three of the next four holes to fall back to +3 through 12 holes. She later rallied with a birdie at the par-4 15th, but gave back two strokes with bogeys on 17 and 18 and is tied for 72nd overall.
Freshman Joanna Saleeby fired a career-best round of five-over 77 with three birdies and eight pars on the day to finish tied for 81st. She was at one-over through five holes, but three straight bogeys on holes 6-8 pushed her front-nine total to 40. Saleeby then played very steady on the back nine, shooting one-over 37 with one birdie and two bogeys.
Junior Stephanie Derrey finished her opening round tied for 87th with a six-over 78. She was at +3 through 13 holes after 10 pars and three bogeys, but ran into trouble on the par-4 14th hole with a triple bogey to fall back to +6. Derrey would recover and finish out her round with four consecutive pars.
Freshman Kathleen Strandberg also fired a six-over 78. She had five straight pars on the front nine and seven more in a row in her final seven holes of the day. However, she ran into a tough stretch of shooting five-over through holes 7-11, including a double bogey on the par-4 10th hole.
UCLA leads a field of 21 teams at -7 (281), followed by Wake Forest and Furman at -4 (284) and Purdue at -3 (285). Top-rated Duke struggled and sits in a tie for 10th at +3 (291).
Wake Forest’s Nannette Hill, UCLA’s Sydnee Michaels and Louisville’s Adrienne White are tied atop in the individual standings at -6 (66).
Second round action continues all day on Friday.
