WILMINGTON, N.C. No. 34 NC State improved by 16 strokes over the first round and moved up to ninth place after compiling a team score of +15 (303) on Saturday during the second round of the Landfall Tradition at the Country Club of Landfall Pines-Ocean course, a par 72, 6,072-yard Jack Nicklaus layout.
The Wolfpack has combined to shoot a two-day team total of +46 (319-303=622).
Senior Stephanie Derrey moved up 17 places into a tie for 30th after firing a one-over 73 on Saturday. She is at +10 (81-73=154) through 36 holes after enjoying a steady second round with two birdies and 14 pars.
Sophomore Emily Street also shot much better in round two with a three-over 75 and stands tied for 38th at +12 (81-75=156). Street posted three birdies on Saturday and was at even-par through 11 holes when she bogeyed three consecutive holes and later doubled the 16th to fall to +4 on the day. However, she rallied on 17 with a birdie and a par on 18.
Sophomores Joanna Saleeby and Kathleen Strandberg are each tied for 40th at +13.
Saleeby shot a five-over 77 during her second round after an 80 on Friday. Saleeby exchanged a birdie on No. 2 and a bogey on No. 3 and then posted seven straight pars heading to No. 11. From there, she bogeyed three of the next five holes and a double on the 18th sent her to a five-over back nine.
Strandberg followed up her first-round 79 with a six-over 78 on Saturday. Similar to Saleeby, Strandberg had two birdies and two bogeys through the first five holes and then steadied her round with five pars when the 11th hole came calling. She bogeyed No. 11, 13 and 16 and triple bogeyed the par-4 17th to limp into the clubhouse.
Junior Lauren Doughtie struggled on a rare occasion for the second straight day and is tied for 44th at +14 (79-79=158). And her problems were much different than her teammates. She actually played the difficult back nine one-under with a birdie at the par-4 13th. However, Doughtie’s mistakes came on what is usually her strong point, the par-5’s. She tripled bogeyed both No. 2 and No. 8 as she shot eight-over on the front.
Wake Forest is atop the leaderboard with a team score of +1 (296-281=577). Purdue’s Christal Boeljon continues to lead the field at -4 (68-72=140).
Third round action continues at 9:12 am on Sunday.
