
Women's Golf Tied in 12th at NCAA East Regional

BROWNS SUMMIT, N.C. - No. 37 NC State women's golf finished the first round of the 2006 NCAA East Regional tied for 12th place and is tied with Atlantic Coast Conference foe Virginia. The Wolfpack, which entered the tournament as the 12-seed, shot 15-over to record a card of 303 at the Bryan National Golf Course in Brown Summit, N.C. Senior Molly Birmingham led the way as she posted a 3-over par outing for a score of 75. She is tied for 39th in the field. NC State will continue with round two on Friday, May 12. Louisiana State and California lead the 21-team field at an even par of 288. Among the ACC teams, North Carolina and Wake Forest are tied in sixth place with a 296 score, while Florida State sits in 10th above NC State with a nine-over tally.
The Wolfpack started the day very well, but hit a rough patch in the middle set. Junior Nancy Mountcastle and her teammates regrouped down the stretch to make up a few strokes.
"I felt we opened very well today," said sixth-year head coach Page Marsh. "We did have a tough stretch during the middle of the day, which set us back a bit. But, I was very proud of how the team came together to keep us in a good position heading into round two tomorrow."
The Wallace, N.C. native posted a birdie on the final hole to give the Pack some momentum heading into round two tomorrow. She finished with a card of 76 (+4). Senior Lorraine Ballerno shot four-over, as did her teammates sophomore Stephanie Derrey and Mountcastle. Freshman Lauren Doughtie was tied for 83rd with a score of 79 (+7).
