RALEIGH, N.C. - NC State women's soccer remains undefeated after a 2-2 double overtime tie with visiting Butler, Sunday, Sept. 19, at SAS Soccer Park in Cary, N.C. The Wolfpack improved to 6-0-2 and Butler moved to 2-2-2 on the year. Rachel Pivarnik and Harnest Kristin each netted for Butler. NC State's senior Erin Griswold and junior Lydia McBath each scored for the Wolfpack. Up next for the Pack is No. 10 Clemson, set for Friday, Sept. 24, at SAS.
The Bulldogs earned its first goal after a Wolfpack foul in the box in the seventh minute. A penalty kick was awarded and Butler's Pivarnik sent it to the upper left corner to take an early 1-0 lead. NC State answered back 10 minutes later at 16:52 with a goal from Griswold, her sixth on the year. Freshman Allie Wilkerson had dribbled from the midline and dropped off a pass to sophomore Carol Tognetti who was following. Tognetti then squared to Griswold who was darting down the flank. The forward one-touched from 18 yards into the top left corner. Her scored evened the tally at one each heading into halftime. Griswold led the Pack with two shots on goal, while Tognetti had one. Butler's Kristin Harnest had one shot on goal. Butler's starting keeper, Annalise Larkin had two saves in the first half. NC State's Megan Connors faced just one shot on goal.
The second half once again resulted a goal for each side. Early in the 61st minute, NC State's McBath made a run down the nearside flank and took a shot from just outside the keeper box to help the Pack to a 2-1 lead. NC State maintained the lead for eight minutes until Butler scored the final goal of the match. The Bulldogs took advantage of a throw in from Marianne Shilling on the nearside. Shilling threw to Jamie Martin, who then created some open space for a pass to Harnest waiting at center. NC State's Megan Buescher attempted a long ball from 20 yards out to put the Wolfpack ahead, but Butler's second keeper, Megan Cappa, who had checked in midway through the second period, captured that ball. The two Butler keepers combined for two saves in the second period. Connors tallied one save in the half.
The Wolfpack dominated both overtime periods, maintaining possession nearly the entire time. NC State didn't allow a shot in the two, 10 minute periods, while they tallied four. Two of the Pack's shot came at the foot of McBath who sent two balls just to the left of the near post. Butler had not taken a corner in regulation and had not had a scoring opportunity until the Bulldogs took a corner in the second overtime. The team had two-straight, but neither resulted in a score.
Overall, NC State outshot Butler 16-6 for the game and held a 7-3 advantage in corner kicks. Butler finished with four saves on the day, while the Pack had one.
"I was happy with the chances we created and I felt we dominated the entire overtime," said NC State head coach Laura Kerrigan. "We just couldn't buy a goal despite those opportunities."
NC State will host No. 10 Clemson at 7 p.m. on Friday at SAS Soccer Park. The Pack is 1-0-0 in ACC play after defeating Miami on Friday, 1-0. The Tigers are 5-2 on the year and recently fell to Florida State in their first ACC game, 2-1.
