RALEIGH, N.C. - The No. 71 NC State women's tennis team finished their season in a disappointing loss to the Maryland Terrapins in the first game of the 2004 ACC Women's Tennis Championship. The match was won 4-0 at the Millbrook Exchange Tennis Center in North Raleigh. Barbara Orlay lost at No. 1 singles and in doubles, but that didn't take away from her accomplishment at being named to the All-ACC team earlier in the day.
Orlay lost 6-1, 6-1 and teamed with Kristin Lam at No. 1 doubles to fall 8-0. Maryland would wrap up the doubles point by winning at No. 2 and No. 3 doubles with 8-4 and 8-3 wins, respectively. Lam, who has been battling knee problems her entire career, held tough in her match at No. 2 singles but could not prevail, falling 6-3, 6-2.
Agustina Arechavaleta (No. 6, DNF), Nandita Chandrasekar (No. 3, DNF) and Jennifer Jassawalla (No. 5, DNF) all were in the middle of their matches when play was called after Lam lost at No. 2. All three had a chance to take their match, but were unable to finish after the fourth, and final point was scored for Maryland.
