FAIRFAX, Va. - The NC State women's soccer team took George Mason (3-1-2) to a 1-1 double overtime tie on Sunday, Sept. 14, to clinch the George Mason/Kappa Invitational title and improve to 4-1-1 overall on the season. Junior Anna Helenius scored the only goal for the Wolfpack.
NC State took control of the match early, holding the Patriots scoreless for nearly the entire first half. George Mason was held to just two shots in that time, but one of them resulted in a goal. With two minutes remaining in the first, GMU's Amy Alecci netted the first goal from 12 yards out. Teammate Allison Cowan assisted on the play when she pushed the ball through to the middle.
The Wolfpack retaliated immediately after the break when Helenius netted a 20 yard shot from the right side with just under one and a half minutes ticked off. Junior Erin Griswold collected a rebounded shot from senior Adrienne Barnes and tipped it out to Helenius. Griswold later had an excellent shot from the same side as Helenius, but it hammered of the cross bar.
The Pack was held at bay by George Mason's keeper Sarah Coughlin who recorded a career-tying 15 saves in the 110 minutes of play. NC State collected 26 shots in the effort and played stellar defense to limit the Patriots to just five, including just one on goal. For NC State, freshman Megan Connors received the starting nod once again and collected the single save and allowed just one goal.
NC State returns home to face the Fighting Camels of Campbell on Friday, Sept. 19, at 4:30 p.m., at Method Road.
