CLEMMONS, N.C. - NC State positioned itself in the mix after posting a team score of 303 Thursday afternoon in the first round of the NCAA Women's Golf East Regional at the Salem Glen Country Club in Clemmons, N.C. Colby Cobb paced the Pack with a two-over-par 73 by firing 15 pars on the afternoon. Two other individuals rank in the top 50 for NC State entering Friday's second round. Duke leads the team standings with a four-over-par 288, and South Carolina's Kristy McPhearson and Furman's Brandi Jackson lead the field with an opening round of 68 at three-under-par.
"We had a few solid rounds today and hope to take strokes off of our scores Friday and Saturday," said head coach Page Marsh as she exited the course late Thursday evening. "Our team has a good feel for the course, and should be able to play solid these next two days. We want to stay in the top eight, that was the goal we set for ourselves before the tournament started. We are on pace to do that, but look to drop some strokes and increase our chances for advancement."
The top eight teams will move on to the NCAA Championship at Purdue University, which will be held May 20-23 at the Birck Boilermaker Course.
Cobb was even on the round through the eighth hole when she birdied a par three. She followed that gem with a bogey on nine to finish even before making the turn. Cobb ran into trouble on the 14th and needed two extra strokes to finish the hole. She finished well at two-over for the round and tied for 14th overall.
Courtney Pomeranz is just one stroke back with a 74, three-over-par. Her scorecard was a little more diverse than Cobb's. She fired three birdies, four bogies and one double-bogey on the seventh hole. Pomeranz was one of many individuals who found the water hazard at seven and needed a drop before reaching the green. She recovered nicely with a birdie on the eighth after knocking her tee shot less than 5' from the pin. She also birdied on 14 and 17. Her mark places her in a tie for 24th.
Briana Vega finished the round with a 77, and was one of three Wolfpackers to birdie the eighth hole. She is tied for 50th with 12 other individuals. Erica Wein was four-over on the front and back nine to finish at eight-over-par with a 79. She birdied a short par four and tricky par three on the day. Sarah Bonner is tied for 79th after a round of 80. She birdied the 12th hole with three of her teammates.
NC State will tee off from the 10th hole beginning at 8:20 Friday morning. The Wolfpack will remained paired with Furman and UNC Wilmington. Fans are invited to walk the course with the team.
