RALEIGH, N.C. - NC State women's tennis opened its season with a 7-0 victory Saturday over UNC Greensboro at the Wolfpack's satellite home-site for the 2003 season, the Cary Tennis Center. The Wolfpack swept the Spartans in straight sets. UNCG falls to 0-2 with the set back.
"It's great to get the first one in the win column," said head coach Hans Olsen. "The team gave a great effort today and really competed hard."
Play began approximately an hour and a half late due to an early morning shower that left the courts a little soggy. Once things dried, the Wolfpack took full control and paced itself to a win.
In the #1 doubles match, Loni Worsley and Myrna Bawono wasted no time downing the Spartan tandem of Lindsey Peel and Lourdes Moran by a score of 8-0. On the next court, things were a lot different. The Wolfpack's Jennifer Jassawalla and Danielle Stadelmann took over an hour to put away Amanda Eutzler and Carlin Kannan, 8-6. A third set was not played because UNCG was unable to field a pair for competition.
Bawono met up with Peel again in the #1 singles match. Bawono took the first set and moved into the second with a lot of momentum. Peel fought back late in the second, but Bawono won 6-2, 6-2.
Kristin Lam got the call for the Wolfpack in the #2 match. Lam made her first appearance on the courts in singles play since the 2001 ACC Tournament. Lam sat out the 2002 campaign with a left knee injury and was unable to play. She suited up this fall for doubles play, going 2-1 with Bawono before injuring her right knee, this time tearing her meniscus. Lam's return to the line up was a successful one, downing Kannan 6-2, 6-3.
The Wolfpack picked up wins at the three, four and five spots as well, getting victories from Worsley, Jassawalla and Stadelmann, respectively. Worsley and Jassawalla blanked their opponents in the second set, while Stadelmann only allowed one game. Carmen Torres picked up a win in the six spot by default.
The Wolfpack will host a double-header at the Cary Tennis Center next weekend. NC State takes on Coastal Carolina at 9 a.m., then faces Appalachian State later in the afternoon at 3:30 p.m.
