Raleigh, NC (Oct. 22) - The NC State women's soccer team used a stiff defensive showing to tie the fifth-ranked Clemson Tigers 0-0 on Oct. 22 at Method Road Soccer Stadium. The Wolfpack is now 9-5-3 on the season (2-2-2 ACC), while Clemson now stands at 15-1-1 (5-1-1 ACC).
Both teams had chances to score throughout the contest. In the fifth minute of play, NC State sophomore forward Laura Scott stole a pass from Clemson defender Allison Sinclair and charged toward the Tiger net. Scott then fell on top of the ball directly in front of Clemson goalkeeper Katie Carson. Scott was ruled in danger and Clemson was subsequently awarded a goal kick. Clemson's best chance to score came in the 118th minute, when sophomore forward Deliah Arrington took a shot towards the far corner of the Wolfpack net, only to have it slide by the far post.
NC State goalkeeper Gretchen Lear saved nine Tiger shots to record her fifth shutout of the season and drop her goals against average for the season to 0.58. Carson also saved three shots for the Tigers in the match.
"Clemson has the fastest forwards in the country," said Wolfpack head coach Laura Kerrigan. "We're really proud to have shut them down today. Both teams were really fatigued out there, and that really showed late in the game. One of the luxuries we have to combat that is the depth we have on our bench."
"The greatest thing about the outcome of today's game is that our girls aren't happy with just a tie against the fifth-ranked team in the nation. We wanted to win and feel as though we could have today. That said, this game should go a long way toward our consideration for the NCAA Tournament."
NC State, ranked eighth in the Southeast, will step out of conference and host Campbell, on Oct. 22 at 4:00 p.m. at Method Road Soccer Stadium.
