Raleigh, NC (Oct. 25) - Freshman forward Katherine Warman and sophomore defender Jenny Pearce each netted goals en route to a 2-0 Wolfpack defeat of visiting Campbell Oct. 25 at Method Road Soccer Stadium. The win boosts NC State's record to 10-5-3 (2-2-2 ACC) on the season and drops Campbell to 4-11-1 (2-6-1 TAAC) for 2000.
Warman's goal came just 2:07 into the game when she stole possesion of the ball from the Camel defender and drilled a six-yard shot just under the arm of Campbell netminder Jamie Olson for her third goal of the season. The Wolfpack struck again at the 35:51 mark of the first half when Pearce headed a high-arching corner kick from Shannon Tully into the right corner of the net. Pearce's goal was the first of her career and came in only her fourth game this season due to a knee injury, which plagued her much of the year.
NC State, ranked 15th nationally by Soccer America, dominated most of the action throughout the game, outshooting the Camels 18-1. Campbell's lone shot came a minute and a half into the contest when midfielder Becky Moghaddam snuck past the Wolfpack defense for a shot that glanced off the left post. NC State goalkeeper Gretchen Lear posted her sixth shutout this season and lowered her goals against average to 0.52. Coming into the week, the Wolfpack had a team goals against average of 0.77, a mark that ranks 20th in the NCAA.
"We figured out how to beat them once we saw that they were going to pack it in on us," said NC State head coach Laura Kerrigan. "We really showed depth out there today and had an opportunity to try some people at different positions. At halftime, we really stressed patience because it is important for us to find the right shot. Overall, we did some things well and I'm really pleased today."
The Wolfpack will host Wake Forest (7-7-1 overall, 2-3 ACC) Sunday, October 29th at 1:00 p.m. at Method Road Soccer Stadium in the season finale.
