STANFORD, Cal. – Stanford used a four-run eighth inning to take the lead and pull away from the Pack in the series opener Friday night, as the Cardinal won 6-5 at the Sunken Diamond.
NC State (30-18, 12-13) led 3-2 going into the bottom of the eighth, but Stanford scored four runs on four hits to make it 6-3. NC State pitching had held the Cardinal scoreless since the first inning.
In the top of the ninth, the Wolfpack tried to mount a comeback, plating two to make it 6-5, but Stanford secured the victory.
Sherman Johnson was responsible for three of the Wolfpack's five runs, going 3-for-3 with two doubles and a home run. Luke Nixon started the ninth-inning rally with a single, finishing 2-for-4, and came around to score on Johnson's hit. Mikey Ryan, who has not played since April 26th, delivered a pinch-hit RBI single in the ninth to make it a one-run game.
The Wolfpack got a strong start from Cooper Consiglio, who went 6.1 innings, allowing just two runs on five hits with three walks and eight strikeouts. Both runs he gave up came in the first inning off wild pitches. Ryder Garino (3-4) took the loss for the Wolfpack.
It was a tough night for the Wolfpack with runners in scoring position, going 2-12 and leaving 11 runners on base, and it had chances for multiple big innings, including bases loaded in back-to-back frames.
Stanford took an early 2-0 lead in the bottom of the first with a two-out rally, as two runs scored on two wild pitches.
NC State cut into the lead following a Sherman Johnson home run. It was his sixth long ball of the season, going 414 feet over the left-field wall to cut the deficit in half and make it 2-1 in the second.
The game was tied following a Drew Lanphere double, which scored Christian Serrano in the top of the sixth. In the next inning, NC State took its first lead of the game after Johnson again delivered with a double to left-center, scoring Ty Head, who had doubled one pitch before.
Rett Johnson, in his first plate appearance, extended his hitting streak to 22 games.
NC State will look to even the series tomorrow, May 9th, with first pitch scheduled for 5:05 p.m. EST.
