STANFORD, Ca. – Stanford scored five runs in the first two innings, but NC State battled back and scored 12 unanswered runs on its way to a 12-7 victory over the Cardinal in game two on Saturday afternoon at the Sunken Diamond.
The Wolfpack (31-18, 13-13) used 11 runs across the fourth, fifth, and sixth innings to start the comeback and break the game open.
Andrew Wiggins, making his first start in right field this season, had a four-RBI day that included his sixth home run of the season. Ty Head hit his team-leading 13th home run of the season and had three walks. Head now has 50 walks on the season and has surpassed his total from last season. He is three walks away from a tie for second in program history for most walks in a season with Jacob Cozart.
Rett Johnson's hitting streak reached 23 games, and fellow freshman Vincent DeCarlo had a two-RBI double, which gave the Wolfpack the lead for good.
Fellow freshman Sam Harris (2-1) had a career outing out of the bullpen in relief, going a career-best 6.1 innings, allowing just two runs on four hits with one walk and four strikeouts on 79 pitches.
Harris came on in the third inning with nobody out and two men on. He got out of the jam and went on to retire the next 10 batters.
Luke Hemric got the start for the Wolfpack and went two innings, allowing five runs on five hits with two walks and two strikeouts. Four of those runs came off Stanford's Teddy Tokheim, who had two two-run home runs.
NC State was much more successful with runners in scoring position today compared to the opener on Friday night. The Pack went 5-14 (.357), holding the Cardinal 0-5. Wolfpack batters were also much more patient at the plate, walking nine times to just five strikeouts.
The comeback started at the top of the fourth as the Wolfpack got on the board after loading the bases with nobody out. Groundball RBIs from Christian Serrano and Dalton Bargo made it 5-2.
A five-run fifth saw NC State take the lead. Wiggins' first RBI of the day came on a single in a 0-2 count to score Chris Mchugh and Luke Nixon. Chaos brought in the tying run as the Wolfpack put on the double steal with Sherman Johnson and Wiggins. The throw went to second, and although it was cut off, the throw home was high and not in time to get Johnson, making it 5-5.
Johnson started the scoring in the sixth with a single, and Nixon scored again. Head, who had walked, came around to score on a passed ball. The big swing came from Wiggins, who hit one 374 feet to the trees in right field, making it 11-5.
Head would add the second home run of the game in the top of the eighth. Although Stanford added two in the eighth and ninth, Mikey Ragusa relieved Harris with one out in the ninth and got the final two outs on seven pitches to even the series.
NC State will look to win its first road ACC series of the season tomorrow, May 10th at 4:05 p.m. EST, before heading back to Raleigh for the final series of the regular season against North Carolina.
