ATLANTA, Ga. – Two home runs in the first two innings were enough for No. 3 Georgia Tech to secure a 3-1 victory over No. 14 NC State at Mac Nease Baseball Park on Friday night.
Ryan Marohn, Danny Heintz, Sam Harris, and Tristan Potts combined to limit the top offense in the country to just three runs on four hits. The Yellow Jackets struck out 10 times compared to the Wolfpack's five.
Marohn (4-1) took his first loss of the season after 6.1 solid innings, ending with three walks and eight strikeouts. He struck out the last four batters he faced and only allowed one hit over the final 4 1/3 innings.
Heintz, Harris, and Potts together allowed just one base runner. Potts entered in the bottom of the eighth with two runners on and one out after an error and struck out two batters to escape the inning.
Georgia Tech's Tate McKee (4-0) pitched 7.1 innings, allowing four hits and one run, with four walks and three strikeouts. Mason Patel recorded his second save of the season, keeping the Wolfpack off the scoreboard in 1.2 innings.
The Wolfpack's best chance to tie the game came at the top of the eighth when they had two runners on with one out. A line drive and a strikeout ended the threat.
The two teams combined were 2-27 with runners on base and 0-12 with runners in scoring position.
The Pack's only run came in the fifth, when Brayden Frassman led off with a single. After a ground ball and a wild pitch, Frassman scored on a ground ball from Rett Johnson.
NC State will look to end its four-game losing streak tomorrow, March 28th, at 7 p.m., with the game broadcast on ACC Network.
