CORAL GABLES, Fla. – No. 13 NC State dropped its second ACC series of the season and suffered its third straight loss following a 10-3 defeat to Miami in game two Saturday night.
The Hurricanes (29-18, 14-9) jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the first and never trailed the rest of the way. Miami used a five-run fourth to pull away, while NC State (30-15, 15-8) scored an unearned run in the third but didn't score until the bottom of the ninth, with the deficit too great to overcome.
Josh Hogue and Luke Nixon each had two hits. Freshman Ryder Woodson, who came on as a pinch hitter, had a hit and picked up his third RBI of the season. All nine of the Wolfpack's hits were singles.
NC State starter Heath Andrews (4-3) allowed eight runs, six of which were earned on eight hits in 3.2 innings. Andrews just had one strikeout and three walks.
AJ Ciscar (4-1) allowed an unearned run across 6.2 innings of work. The freshman struck out six with one walk and allowed five hits.
The Hurricanes racked up 15 hits on the evening and were once again led by Daniel Cuvet, who totaled three more RBIs on three hits and two walks. Dorian Gonzalez had a four-RBI night, joining Cuvet with three hits.
Just as they had done last night, Miami took the lead in the first innings after stringing together two two-out hits off of Andrews. A single and a double pushed a run across and a 1-0 lead.
NC State tied the game in the top of the third after Ty Head reached first base from a hit-by-pitch and advanced to third from a Hogue single, with the throw coming into third and Hogue Hustling to second a Miami throwing error allowing Head to score easily.
The Hurricanes came up in the bottom half of the third and retook the lead, scoring twice to make it 3-1.
A five-run fourth for the hosts made it 8-1. Tristan Potts and Carson Kelly came on in relief and put up zeros, with Kelly picking off two base runners in the fifth. Cooper Consiglio finished the night, going 2.2 innings, allowing two runs on four hits with four strikeouts and two walks.
In the top of the ninth inning, NC State scored two runs on three hits. Ryan Jaros singled off the right field wall to bring in his 14th RBI of the year.
Up Next: The Wolfpack will look to salvage the series' final game tomorrow, May 4th, at noon on ACCNX.
