CARLSBAD, Calif. – Marie Eline Madsen played in her first NCAA Championship, which took place at Omni La Costa in Carlsbad, California. The freshman, who represented NC State as an individual for the first time since 2008, carded a 6-over 222 (70-77-75) to finish in a tie for 55th out of 150+ golfers.
FIRST ROUND
Madsen started out the tournament in the afternoon wave, braving through windy conditions in the latter part of the round. She ended the first round with a 2-under 70 to sit in a tie for 10th following round one. After a bogey on three, Madsen started to fire away with four birdies and two pars to wrap up the front nine at 3-under par. She continued that momentum with an eagle on 10 followed by a birdie on 11 to sit on top of the leaderboard at 6-under par. The conditions started to get tough to brave, as she closed out the remaining holes with one bogey, two double bogeys, one birdie and three pars.
Her six birdies tied for the most in the field and she was one of two with an eagle on day one. The 70 was also the third lowest round for an individual and lowest since 2014 by an NC State golfer at an NCAA Championship.
SECOND ROUND
Madsen carded a 5-over 77 in round two to slide into a tie for 43rd after two rounds. She was 4-over par through the back nine after teeing off on 10. After back-to-back bogeys on two and three, Madsen redeemed herself throughout the remaining six holes with one birdie and five pars to finish one-over par on the front.
THIRD ROUND
The freshman carded a 3-over 75 in round three. Starting out on hole 10, Madsen bogeyed 13 and 14 before getting redemption birdies on 16 and 1. She then had a double bogey on two and a bogey on four before closing out strong with five straight pars to finish 2-over in the front and 1-over in the back.
Madsen missed the cut of being one of the top nine individuals that are not in the top 15 teams to advance to the fourth round of stroke play.
