RALEIGH, NC—No. 13 NC State had its seven-game winning streak snapped Tuesday night as it fell 6-3 to UNC Wilmington in the final midweek game from the Doak this season.
It is the third straight win for the Seahawks over the Wolfpack dating back to last year. The Seahawks took the lead and never relinquished it.
For NC State (30-13), the game story involved leaving runners on base and not capitalizing with runners in scoring position. The Wolfpack was 1-16 with runners in scoring position and 4-23 with runners on base.
Chris McHugh brought in two of the three runs for the Wolfpack and his team-leading 47th and 48th RBIs, extending his hitting and on-base streak after a double and a single on the night. McHugh has an eight-game hitting streak and his second 16-game base streak of the season.
Luke Nixon had a double and triple on the night, while Brayden Fraasman, who is coming off winning the ACC Player of the Week, recorded a hit and scored a run. Ty Head, in the leadoff spot, scored twice and singled.
Cooper Consiglio (1-3) went three innings in the loss, allowing three runs on three hits with one walk and four strikeouts. Two of the three runs came on a home run in the first inning. Camden Wimbish came on after and allowed a run in the fourth, but Carson Kelly, Tristian Potts, and Jacob Dudan kept it a two-run game through the eighth.
Drew Lanphere made it a one-run game in the bottom of the eighth with a ground ball to first, but UNCW, in the top of the ninth, used two unearned runs after an error with two outs extended it to a three-run lead with NC State unable to rally in the bottom of the frame.
The Seahawks used six different pitchers. Bromley Thorton got the start and pitched four innings, allowing just two runs on five hits, one walk, and three strikeouts. Baker Cox (1-1) earned the win after throwing 1.2 innings, allowing no runs and no hits with two strikeouts. Trace Baker came on in the ninth and picked up his fifth save.
UP NEXT: NC State will return to ACC play on Friday, May 2, at 7 p.m. as they travel to Miami to take on the Hurricanes for a three-game series and begin a seven-game road trip. Next Tuesday, they travel to Wilmington for a rematch with the Seahawks and then make the short trip to Chapel Hill. NC State will return to the Doak for the final series of the regular season to take on Stanford May 15-17.
