GREENVILLE, N.C. - Marie Eline Madsen of the No. 41 NC State women's golf team earned her first career win with a 6-under 210 (70-71-69) at the ECU Ironwood Invitational. Her win marks the first time since 2015 a Wolfpack freshman has won a tournament.
The Pack finished third as a team to earn its fifth top five finish of the season. NC State finished with a 34-over 898 (302-301-295).
Madsen finished at under par throughout all three rounds, highlighted by her ninth round in the 60s with a 69 on Tuesday behind six birdies, 10 pars, one bogey and one double bogey. Three of her birdies in the third round came on three consecutive holes from 11-13. She finished the tournament with a tournament-field leading 14 birdies with 33 pars. Madsen now has 16 rounds at par or better and her first career win, while having finished in the top 10 in seven of her nine tournament appearances. Her par 4s average tied for a tournament field's best (2.92), while her par 4s (3.97) and par 5s average (4.67) were the second best.
Madsen's win is the first by a freshman since India Clyburn in 2015 and second by a member of the Pack this season after Lauren Olivares Leon shared the Landfall Tradition title in the fall.
Three Wolfpack players tied for 28th. Jaclyn Kenzel finished inside the top 30 after logging a 13-over 229 (79-75-75). Kenzel finished play with back-to-back 75s, including on Tuesday where she had one birdie, 13 pars and four bogeys. Vania Simont tallied a 13-over 229 (76-79-74). She closed out the tournament with a 74 on Tuesday behind three birdies, 10 pars and five bogeys. Leena Stephens played as an individual this week and delivered a career-low 13-over 229 (75-74-80).
Lea Ludwig registered a 17-over 233 (80-76-77) to tie for 48th and Cailin Whitehead finished in a tie for 53rd with an 18-over 234 (77-79-78).
As a team, the Pack finished second in par 4s average (4.15), third in birdies (28) and fourth in par 5s average (5.17).
Olivares Leon did not play this weekend, as she is preparing for the Augusta National Women's Amateur. The first round will take place tomorrow, Wednesday, April 2, as she will tee off at 9:21 a.m. Coverage of the tournament will be aired on the Golf Channel. The top 30 players including ties after the first two rounds will move on to the final round to be played at the Augusta National Golf Club. More information on the tournament can be found HERE.
