CHARLOTTE, N.C. – NC State men's basketball sophomore guard Paul McNeil, Jr., earned Atlantic Coast Conference Men's Basketball Player of the Week honors for games played from December 15-21, as announced by the conference office on Monday.
McNeil, Jr., shattered the school's three-point record – and tied the ACC's record – with 11 three-pointers in the Pack's win over Texas Southern on Wednesday. The previous school record was nine set by Rodney Monroe in a game against UNC Asheville in December 1989. He is now in a three-way tie for the most in a single game by an ACC player and is the first conference player since the February 2002 to make 11 threes in a single game.
McNeil, Jr., finished the game against the Tigers with a career-high 47 points. The 47 points are the fifth-most in a single game in program history and are the most by an ACC player since Monroe had 48 against Georgia Tech on January 13, 1991.
The Rockingham, N.C., native added a career-best 10 rebounds against Texas Southern as he finished the game with the first double-double of his collegiate career.
In the Pack's win over Ole Miss on Sunday, McNeil, Jr., led NC State in scoring with 19 points as he made six three-pointers in the win over the Rebels. He added six rebounds and two steals in the win.
For the week, McNeil Jr., averaged 33 points per game and made 17 three-pointers, shooting 58.6 percent (17-of-29) from three-point range.
The sophomore guard and the rest of his NC State teammates jump back into action on New Year's Eve when it opens ACC play by hosting Wake Forest. Tipoff against the Demon Deacons is scheduled for noon and the game will be televised on ESPN2.
