PITTSBURGH, Pa. – The NC State volleyball team fell to fourth-ranked Pitt in straight sets Friday evening at Fitzgerald Field House.
Freshman outside Rebecca Ring scored the first points of the evening to kick things off but the Panthers quickly took a 7-2 lead to force and early timeout by head coach Megan Wargo-Kearney.
Pitt went on to take a 10-point (13-3) lead to force Wargo-Kearney to use her final timeout of the opening frame. The Pack switched to a 6-2 offense and went on a 4-1 scoring run to slow the Panthers a bit. Pitt took the first set, 25-11.
The Pack took a 2-0 lead to begin the second set to slow the Panthers. Pitt used a 3-0 scoring run to regain the lead, 6-5, but back-to-back kills by Courtney Bryant gave NC State back the lead. A back-and-forth battle started between the two programs with neither team leading by more than two at a time.
The Panthers led, 15-13, headed into the media timeout in the second. The Pack faced its largest deficit (19-14) of the set, forcing Wargo-Kearney to use a timeout with hopes of regrouping the Pack. Bryant tallied her seventh kill of the evening and an error by the Panthers allowed the Pack to minimize the deficit to three (19-16). Pitt used a 10-6 scoring run to close out the second set, 25-19.
NC State fell behind, 8-3, to open the third set forcing an early timeout to be used by Wargo-Kearney. The Pack used a 10-4 scoring run to minimize the deficit to three (17-14), forcing Pitt head coach Dan Fisher to use a timeout.
Pitt would take the final set, 25-16, holding the Pack to just a 0.185 hitting percentage in the third set.
Bryant led the Wolfpack with eight kills while Ring and senior Lily Cropper each added seven. Freshman Talia Francom recorded six blocks to lead the Pack defensively.
NC State moves to 10-9 on the season and 3-6 in conference play.
