#20 Wolfpack Hosts UNCW For In-State Midweek Matchup

RALEIGH, N.C. – The No. 20 NC State baseball team concludes a four-game homestand on Tuesday night against in-state foe UNCW at Doak Field at Dail Park. Tuesday night's midweek matchup is set for 5 p.m.
Tuesday's game will stream live on ACC Network Extra. A free audio stream will be available for Tuesday's contest on the Varsity Network App and will be available on the radio on WKNC 88.1 with Tony Haynes on the call.

THE MATCHUP: SERIES AGAINST UNCW
NC State holds a 77-21 all-time advantage in the series against UNCW. More notes from the series against the Seahawks are listed below:
• NC State swept the two-game set against the Seahawks this past season, posting an 11-8 win in 10 innings on March 21 before completing the season sweep with a 12-3 victory at Doak Field on April 11. In the Wolfpack's home matchup against UNCW, NC State used an eight-run fourth inning to flip a 2-1 deficit into a 9-2 Wolfpack lead. The Pack stretched its advantage to 12-2 after the fifth as five batters tallied multi-hit performances.
• NC State has won 11 of its past 13 matchups against the Seahawks dating back to the 2016 season.
• NC State and UNCW first met in 1971 as head coach Sam Esposito's team posted a 3-1 victory in Wilmington.
• UNCW withstood a late Wolfpack rally to notch a 5-4 victory over NC State on April 9. The NC State bullpen efforts of Win Scott and Derrick Smith kept the Pack within striking distance as the relief duo struck out eight opposing batters while allowing just three hits and two runs over 6.2 innings pitched.
SCOUTING THE SEAHAWKS
UNCW (28-16, 14-4 CAA) ranks tied for first in the Coastal Athletic Association after posting its third straight CAA series victory this past weekend over William & Mary. The Seahawks are 8-3 since its midweek victory over the Wolfpack on April 9, which includes a midweek win over then-No. 12 Wake Forest at Durham Bulls Athletic Park. Tanner Thach ranks seventh nationally and first in the CAA with 21 homers, leading the Seahawks with 56 RBI, 124 total bases and a .705 slugging percentage. Tuesday night starter Ryan Calvert also started against NC State on April 9, tossing 2.2 innings while allowing two runs on three hits with four strikeouts.
A SUCCESSFUL SUNDAY: VICTORY OVER CANCER GAME
NC State completed a three-game series sweep over Ball State with an 11-3 win on Sunday afternoon at Doak Field at Dail Park. The Wolfpack also celebrated its inaugural Victory Over Cancer Game, inviting local families affected by pediatric cancer to Sunday's game while raising over $50,860 to support pediatric cancer research. Fans can still donate to Sunday's cause at v.org/turner.
NC State players and its coaching staff honored Sunday's inaugural event with gold uniforms, which is the awareness ribbon color for pediatric cancer. The Wolfpack also welcomed local families onto the field pregame to interact with Pack9 players and staff. The family of Pack Pro Trea Turner, who was integral to Sunday's event, was also in attendance for Sunday's victory at Doak Field.
TOUGH SLATE
NC State has exceled so far during its gauntlet of a finish to ACC play with all of its final five ACC series coming against top 15 teams in this week's D1Baseball Top 25. The Wolfpack has recorded three straight series victories over then-No. 2 Clemson, then-No. 11 North Carolina and Ball State. NC State concludes its ACC schedule with series at No. 7 Florida State and No. 11 Virginia before hosting No. 13 Wake Forest to finish the regular season.
NC State's strength of schedule checks in at No. 10 nationally, according to warrennolan.com. The Wolfpack also has seven wins over Quadrant I opponents.
A-MAK AMBIDEXTROUS
Switch-hitting third baseman Alec Makarewicz has shown off his pop throughout the Wolfpack's 2024 campaign, ranking first on the roster with 17 homers. Makarewicz has homered from both the right side of the plate and the left side of the plate twice this season, accomplishing the feat for the second time in April 9's midweek matchup at UNCW. His first time homering from both sides was in the Wolfpack's win at Hawaii on Feb. 23.
HOME SUCCESS AT THE DOAK
Welcome to our house. Doak Field at Dail Park has served as a dominant home field advantage for the Wolfpack since 1966. In 2023, the Pack finished with a 26-7 record at The Doak. Since head coach Elliott Avent returned to Raleigh to take over the #Pack9 program in 1997, NC State has posted a 621-231 (.729) record in games played at Doak Field at Dail Park. With three wins over Ball State this past weekend, NC State has now won 20 or more games at The Doak 22 times since Avent's first year as head coach in 1997.
STRIKE FIRST, STRIKE HARD, NO MERCY
NC State held a 25-2 record when scoring first this past season. The Pack scored in the first inning 21 times and scored in either the first or second inning 30 times in 2023. NC State is 15-3 in games when scoring first so far this season, scoring first in all three games of its weekend sweep over Ball State.
BRING OUT THE BROOMS
NC State brought out the brooms five times this past season with five three-game sweeps, recording three sweeps over nonconference opponents (Wagner, Belmont and NJIT) and two over ACC opponents (Florida State and Pitt). NC State has recorded 79 weekend sweeps (three-game or four-game series against the same opponent) since Avent's first season in 1997. The Pack has tallied 40 sweeps since the completion of the 2012 season and 69 sweeps since the completion of the 2002 campaign.
The most three-game/four-game sweeps an Avent-coached Wolfpack team has recorded in a single season has been five, which has now been accomplished in 2023, 2022, 2019, 2013, 2010, 2006 and his first season with the Pack in 1997. The Wolfpack has now recorded four weekend sweeps this season after this past weekend's clean sweep of Ball State.
