RALEIGH, N.C. – The No. 20 NC State baseball team fell 5-4 in extra innings to UNCW on Tuesday night at Doak Field.
The Seahawks (29-16) rallied from a pair of three-run deficits to clip the Wolfpack in extra innings. Trevor Marsh's two-out RBI double in the 10th inning scored the game-winning run as reliever Luke Craig (4-0) tossed four scoreless innings in relief to earn the win.
NC State (25-17) southpaw Ryan Marohn, one appearance after picking up his first-career save on Friday, tossed five innings of one-run ball to help the Pack build a 4-1 lead. Marohn limited UNCW to just two hits, opening his outing with four hitless innings before the Seahawks pushed across their first run with two outs in the fifth.
The Seahawks tied the score at 4-4 with three runs in the top of the sixth. UNCW loaded the bases in the sixth with a leadoff single and back-to-back HBPs. A bases-loaded walk, a sacrifice fly and a wild pitch allowed three Seahawks to cross home plate and knot the score at 4-4.
Matt Heavner almost re-established a multi-run Wolfpack lead in the bottom of the sixth, driving an 0-1 pitch to the wall in left field. UNCW left fielder Brock Wills leapt at the wall and robbed Heavner's would-be two-run homer, keeping the score tied at 4-4 heading to the seventh.
Freshman reliever Jacob Dudan entered the bottom of the sixth with the bases loaded and nobody out, allowing just two more runs to score to limit the damage. Dudan then tossed back-to-back scoreless frames in the seventh and eighth to keep the score knotted at four apiece. He also tossed a scoreless ninth, striking out his fifth and final batter of the night to cap four scoreless innings with five strikeouts.
Jacob Cozart continued his hot streak Tuesday with a two-out, two-run shot in the first, giving the Wolfpack a 2-0 lead. Cozart's homer to right-center marked his seventh home run in the past eight games.
Garrett Pennington then extended the Pack's lead to 3-0 with a solo shot in the bottom of the third.
After Kevin Jones got UNCW on the board with an RBI single in the fifth, Cozart provided an immediate response with another two-out homer, battling back from an 0-2 count before hammering a 2-2 pitch 446 feet off the scoreboard for his eighth homer in the past eight games. Cozart's solo shot marked his 14th home run and his third multi-homer game of the season.
Derrick Smith (3-1) suffered his first loss of the season after allowing one run in the 10th inning.
