RALEIGH, N.C.- No. 11 NC State men's tennis fell short 4-0 to No. 17 Florida State in the quarterfinals of the ACC tournament Friday, April 19 at Cary Tennis Park. The Pack took the court with hopes to extend its conference season a little longer but the Semnioles had other plans.
Facing the Seminoles only two weeks ago in Tallahassee, FL, the Pack didn't quite bring the same energy as it's 4-3 win. In an intense battle in doubles play, the Seminoles got an early lead making short work of Joe Wayand and Martin Borisiouk. Florida State extended their lead to 6-2, leaving the Pack to try to play catch-up.
Juniors Fons Van Sambeek and Braden Shick came out strong on court three, giving opponents Alex Bulte and Jamie Connel (FSU) a tough battle taking the match 6-2. With the point on the line, No. 41 doubles pair Robin Catry and Luca Staeheli took three games, but slowly let the lead slipped away in a split decision.
Taking the doubles' point, the Seminoles applied pressure to singles play. With all courts down, junior Damien Salvestre took the first set on court five but the Seminoles momentum was too strong on opposing courts clinching wins on courts four, three, and one, leaving Salvestre match abandoned.
After facing defeat in the first and last match of the ACC tournament, the Pack will have to wait one more year for a chance at the championship.
