RICHMOND, Va. – The Wolfpack volleyball team was tested in its first road match of the season, dropping a 3-0 contest at Richmond. NC State (2-1) put up a fight in a third set that featured 12 ties and seven lead changes but could not hold off the Rams. VCU (3-2) won by set scores of 25-12, 25-17 and 25-23.
Daniela McDonald led the Wolfpack with her second-consecutive nine kill performance, hitting .421. Jessica Kemp and Melissa Evans both contributed seven kills while Kaylee Frazier once again led the defensive effort with 15 digs.
"We got to the third set and things got a lot better however, it was a little bit too late at that point," said head coach Linda Hampton-Keith. "I'd like to see us respond to this. We have two more matches this weekend and the best thing we can do is learn from this experience and make sure that we prepare in a way that's fitting. To make sure that right out of the gate we're ready to go, ready to play the volleyball that we know, we know how to play."
MATCH REWIND
After a match opening kill from Evans, VCU fired off a 7-2 run taking the lead as the Pack offense found its footing. Following two Rams errors, NC State narrowed the score to 10-7 but VCU's offense continued with four-consecutive points, taking a 14-7 lead. VCU would hold the lead, eventually taking the second set as well.
The Wolfpack came back strong in the third set, opening with a 4-1 lead which included three kills from McDonald, Kemp and Lauryn Terry. The pair of teams battled back-and-forth with neither team taking a lead larger than VCU's three points at 9-6. The Pack used a 7-2 run to move ahead 13-11. NC State held control of the match, 17-15, until a service error and Rams block tied the match at 17. Tied at 21-21, Grace Irvin floated a service ace before Evans notched her seventh kill of the night putting NC State up 23-21. The Rams ended the match with four straight points.
