Wolfpack Open 2019 With Pair of Victories

RALEIGH, N.C. – The NC State Volleyball team opened its 2019 season with a pair of victories in front of its home crowd at Reynolds Coliseum Friday evening. The Wolfpack swept Austin Peay, 3-0 (25-14, 25-13, 26-24), before coming back to defeat Kansas State, 3-1 (23-25, 25-14, 25-20, 25-19).
Melissa Evans led the Wolfpack in both matches, tallying 14 kills against Austin Peay before putting up an impressive 19 against the Wildcats. Freshman Daniela McDonald made an impact for NC State against Kansas State with nine. Jade Parchment also continued her momentum following the 2018 season with 15 kills on the day.
Defensively, libero Kaylee Frazier and Grace Irvin held down the back row including a career-high 20 digs from Frazier against the Wildcats. NC State also saw the debut of redshirt freshman Nina Sharpton and freshman Kristen McDaniel who split setting duties, combining for 78 assists between the two matches.
MATCH 1 VS. AUSTIN PEAY
After cruising through the first two sets, 25-14 and 25-13, the Wolfpack faced its first deficit of the day. Following five early ties, both teams were knotted at 7-7 before the Govs took their first lead of the night with a 4-0 run. NC State would fight its way back, tying the set at 17, but Austin Peay continued to keep its hopes alive with three straight points. Down 23-19, Evans fired off three consecutive kills to put the Wolfpack right back in it at 22-23. A kill from Pam Chukwujekwu and two from Evans completed the set comeback and clinched NC State's first sweep of the season.
MATCH 2 VS. KANSAS STATE
With the first set of the match tied 7-7, Kansas State took advantage of two Wolfpack attack errors and followed it up with two kills of its own for an 11-7 lead. After a back-and-forth contest, McDonald came up big with three straight kills giving NC State a 16-14 lead. NC State struggled to quite Kansas State as the Wildcats took back the lead, ending the set on an 8-3 run.
NC State showed its fight early in the second set, coming out strong before firing off a 7-2 run that gave the team a dominant 17-12 lead. The kills kept coming for the Pack as they put down another five on the way to the set victory. The final two sets featured nine lead changes and 15 ties, however, Kansas State's errors continued to plague them as the Wolfpack strung together multiple runs. The Wildcats totaled 17 hitting errors and 11 service errors.

- NC State moves to 33-12 all-time in its season openers and 3-1 under head coach Linda Hampton-Keith.
- It is the first time the Wolfpack have opened a season 2-0 since 2015, and the first time they've done it at home since 2009.
- Jessica Kemp and Chukwujekwu both set career-high kills with eight and seven, respectively.
- The Wolfpack recorded 11 service aces against Kansas State, including a career-high four from Nina Sharpton.
