HANAHAN S.C. – Due to Hurricane Florence approaching, the Cougar Classic has been shortened to 36 holes and the final round at Yeamans Hall in Hanahan, S.C., has been cancelled. The NC State women's golf team wrapped up its first tournament of the 2018-19 season with an 11th-place finish out of 19 teams.
The Wolfpack shot a combined 291 (+3) in the first round and concluded the tournament on Monday with a six-over par 294 for a total of 584 (+8). Due to heavy rain and unplayable conditions, play was suspended on Sunday and therefore the first round was completed on Monday morning.
Florida claimed the team title with a 546 (-30), while Vanderbilt (549, -27) and Arkansas (560,-16) rounded out the top three of the team standings.
Laura Kowohl picked up where she left off in the 2017-18 season, collecting her third consecutive top 20 finish and seventh of her career. She carded a two-under 70 in both rounds to finish T15th with a 140 (-4).
Naomi Ko finished six strokes behind Kowohl at T36th after posting a 73 (+1) in both rounds for a total of 146 (+2). Monika Hartl and India Clyburn each shot a combined 150 to finish in a tie for 64th, as Hartl turned in rounds of 73 and 77 and Clyburn shot a pair of 75s.
Mim Sangkapong rounded out the team's showing with a 36-hole total of 154 to finish T83rd. After shooting a 79 (+7) in the opening round she shaved four strokes off round two with a three-over 75.
NC State will return to action Sept. 17-18 when it travels to Knoxville, Tenn., to compete in the Mercedes-Benz Collegiate. The tournament will be hosted by Tennessee at Cherokee Country Club.
