NEW LONDON, N.C. – Despite shooting its best team score in a single round of an ACC Championship since 2004, the NC State men's golf team could not move up the leaderboard Sunday as it finished in eighth place at the 65th annual championship held at the Old North State Club.
The Pack combined to shoot eight-under par 280 on Sunday and finished with a three-round score of 846. The 846 is the lowest team score for NC State in the ACC Championship since 2002 when the Pack shot 841 as a team on its way to a second-place finish.
Georgia Tech won the competition with a three-round score of 29-under par. Clemson finished two shots back of the Yellow Jackets and one shot ahead of Wake Forest for second. Virginia finished two shots back of the Demon Deacons in fourth.
Duke, UNC-Chapel Hill, Notre Dame and NC State all finished within two shots of each other. Duke claimed fifth with a score of 20-under par and the Tar Heels and Fighting Irish finished in a tie for sixth at 19-under. The Pack claimed eighth place at 18-under, while Florida State finished two shots back of NC State in ninth at 16-under.
Stephen Franken led the NC State with a three-round score of 10-under par 206 to finish in a tie for sixth place. Franken's total score of 206 is the lowest for an NC State player in the ACC Championship since Matt Hill tied for the win with a score of 2006 in the 2009 ACC Championship.
Franken had the best round of the tournament for an NC State player on Sunday as he shot a five-under par 67.
The Raleigh native opened the day with a double bogey and then had four consecutive pars to sit at two-over through five holes. Franken then righted his day by birdieing four of the next five holes to go to two-under after 10 holes. The NC State junior had pars on the next two holes before going on another streak, registering birdies on three of the next four holes. After a bogey on his second-to-last hole, Franken ended his day with a birdie to finish at five-under.
The top-10 finish is the seventh in 10 tournaments this season for Franken.
Justin Hood was next for the Pack in a tie for eighth place at nine-under par for the tournament. The NC State junior was consistent throughout the tournament as he recorded a three-under par 69 in all three rounds. On Sunday, Hood played nearly error free golf as he had just one bogey and four birdies.
Benjamin Shipp had his best round of the tournament on Sunday with a two-under par 70. Shipp had three birdies and had his lone bogey of the day on the last hole of his round. For the tournament, the Duluth, Ga., native finished in a tie for 30th place with a three-day score of even-par 216.
Easton Paxton and Harrison Rhoades rounded out the Pack lineup in a tie for 38th-place at three-over par. Both Pack golfers shot a two-over par 74 on Sunday. Paxton had one birdie and three bogeys in his 18 holes on Sunday, while Rhoades had three birdies, but three bogeys and a double bogey left him with a 74 for the round.
Next up for the Pack is the 2018 NCAA Tournament Division I Men's Golf selection show. The selection show is Wednesday, May 2 at 5:30 p.m. on the Golf Channel. NC State's home course Lonnie Poole Golf Course is one of four sites that will host an NCAA Regional this year.
