
Pack in Third Place after One Round of NCAA Regional

NC State's opening round score of 275 is third-lowest NCAA Regional team score in program history

RALEIGH, N.C. – The NC State men's golf team shot a nine-under-par 275 on Monday to stand in third place after the opening round of the NCAA Raleigh Regional played at Lonnie Poole Golf Course.
The Pack's score of 275 is the third-lowest round score in an NCAA Regional in program history.
Stephen Franken and Benjamin Shipp led the Pack on Monday as the duo combined to register 10 birdies and no bogeys. Franken is in a tie for third place after shooting a six-under 65 in the opening round. Starting on the 10th hole, the ACC Player of the Year recorded a birdie on hole 11 and then rang up three in a row with birdies on 14, 15 and 16. After seven consecutive pars, Franken had birdies on holes 6 and 7 to enter the clubhouse in a three-way tie for third place, one shot back of the individual co-leaders.
Franken's 65 ties with Tim Clark for the lowest score in a single round in an NCAA Regional in NC State history. Clark shot a seven-under 65 in 1998 in the NCAA East Regional held at Daufuskie Island, S.C.
Shipp shot a four-under par 67 and is in a tie for sixth place on the individual leaderboard. Shipp had birdies on holes 16, 17 on the opening nine and then had birdies on 1 and 7 on the back half of his first round.
The Pack's lineup was rounded out by Easton Paxton with an even-par 71, Harrison Rhoades who finished one-over at 72 and Justin Hood fired a two-over 73.
The Pack is one shot back of second place Georgia Tech and four shots back of first round leader Texas. The Longhorns shot a 13-under par 271 in the opening round.
Doug Ghim of Texas and Iona's Justin Burkhamer are tied for the top-spot on the individual leaderboard with a seven-under par 64. Franken, Arizona State's Chun An Yu and Santa Clara's Jack Avrit are all one shot back of the first place duo in a tie for third place.
The second round of the three round regional is scheduled to start Tuesday at 7:30 a.m.
The low five teams and the low individual not on those teams from each regional will advance to the finals.
