PINEHURST, N.C. - No. 21 NC State opened up a 15-shot lead over two rounds, led by three top-five individual performances at the par-72, 5,983 yard Pinehurst No. 6 for day one of the Pinehurst Spring Challenge Monday.
Vivian Tsui takes the 36-hole lead into Tuesday’s final round after a 72-68--140 (-4). Tsui holds a two-stroke advantage over fellow Wolfpacker Ana Menendez, whose 5-under par 67 in the first round represents the lowest single round score in NC State history. Menendez followed her school-record round with a 75 to fall two shots back of Tsui in a tie for second.
Brittany Marchand and No. 43 Augusta James both landed in the top-10 through two rounds. Marchand pulled into a tie for fifth with her 73-70--143 (-1). James nabbed a share of ninth with her 74-72--146 (+2).
Freshman Lindsay McGetrick made her first career appearance in the Pack lineup, grabbing a share of 32nd with a par of 3-over par 75s.
State’s first round 2-under par 286 marks the third best single round score the Pack has compiled in 2012, trailing the program’s record-setting 282 from the Cards Challenge. Not satisfied, the Wolfpack fired a 3-under 285 in the second round to notch the second-best score in program history.
In Tuesday’s final round, the Pack has designs on setting some major program records. State can fire a 286 or better to break the school’s record for three-round team total. Tsui would need a 67 or better to break the individual three-round score. A win would tie the Pack’s previous best for most team wins in a season, three in 2002.
If Marchand can make up her three-shot deficit and secure medalist honors, she would become the first Wolfpack women's golfer to record multiple wins in a single season, and extend her lead as NC State's all-time winningest golfer.
