STILLWATER, Okla. - 20th-seeded and 24th-ranked NC State wrapped up day one of the NCAA Men's Golf Championship with a combined score of 22-over 310 on Tuesday at the par-72, 7,416-yard Karsten Creek layout.
The Wolfpack, who is making its 16th appearance in the NCAA Finals, finds itself 29th among a field of 30 teams after the first of three stroke-play rounds. The field will be cut down to eight teams after 54 holes and will compete in a three-day match play format that will settle who wins the national title.
Sophomore Mitchell Sutton, who along with teammate Albin Choi, was named to the PING All-Region team earlier in the day led the way with a 4-over 76 that included birdies on the first and 18th hole, with six bogeys sprinkled in between.
Senior Brandon Detweiler followed with a 5-over 77, while Choi fired a 6-over 78 for what amounts to his worst round of what has been a spectacular freshman season for the Toronto native. Choi leads the ACC in scoring average and was named the league's freshman of the year by a unanimous vote a few weeks ago.
Junior Graham Baillargeon carded a 7-over 79, and classmate Chad Day turned in an 8-over 80 on day one.
ACC champion Georgia Tech leads the field after a 5-under 283, while UCLA comes in three shots behind after a 286, and Alabama is in third at even-par 288.
Ohio State posted the best round of the morning wave, a 3-over 291 that leaves them tied for fifth. The Buckeyes are the only team among the top-seven in the field that went off in the morning group.
NC State had the first tee times of the day off No. 10 with San Diego and Oklahoma. They are tied for 12th and 30th, respectively.
In comparison, UCLA, Alabama and Oklahoma State were the first groups off the back nine in the afternoon and they are currently second, third and eighth, but to their credit are the top-3 seeds in the field.
Georgia Tech's James White fired a 5-under 67 to lead the individual field, one shot in front of Texas A&M's Cameron Peck.
Austin Cook of Arkansas shot a 2-under 70 to take the clubhouse lead in the morning. Only four of the 75 golfers with morning tee times carded under-par rounds.
NC State will begin Wednesday's second round at 12:40 p.m. CST.
