Final Round Results
OCALA, Fla. - No. 24 NC State is going back to the NCAA Men's Golf Championship after a fourth-place finish Saturday at the NCAA Florida Regional at Golden Ocala Golf Course.
Sophomore Mitchell Sutton earned a share of medalist honors at 10-under 206 with Augusta State’s Patrick Reed and Missouri’s Jace Long, who shot a 10-under 62 today.
The fifth-seeded Wolfpack shot a third and final-round team score of 2-under 286 to finish the 54-hole event at 9-under 855 at the par 72 course that covers 6,994 yards.
Florida, Augusta State, Kennesaw State, NC State and Arkansas, the top five finishers at the regional, will take part in the NCAA Championship that begins May 31 in Stillwater, Okla.
This is the 16th appearance in the NCAA Finals for the Wolfpack, and the first since 2006. However, Matt Hill did play as an individual in 2009 and won the event that year as he was named the top collegiate golfer in the nation.
Sutton, an All-ACC selection in his second season at NC State, held the 36-hole lead after rounds of 68 and 67 on Thursday and Friday, respectively. Today he settled for a 1-over 71 that featured three birdies and two bogeys. The London, Ontario, native recorded 15 birdies in the tournament, and was never worse than bogey for 54 holes.
The win is Sutton's second of the season.
Senior Brandon Detweiler shot the best round of the day for the five Wolfpackers with a 4-under 68 that catapulted him 19 spots up the leader board to finish the event tied for 21st at 1-under 215.
The Akron, Pa., native refused to allow this to be his final collegiate round by collecting six birdies on Saturday, three on each set of nine. He became the second NC State golfer to record a half dozen birdies in a round this weekend, after Sutton did so on both Thursday and Friday.
ACC Freshman of the Year Albin Choi finished tied for 24th at even-par 216. He shot a 1-over 73 during the final round that featured four birdies, including a clutch one at 18 that all but clinched the Pack's chances of advancing to the championship.
Junior Graham Baillargeon notched his best round of the tournament with a 2-over 74 today that placed him tied for 64th at 12-over 228. After Thursday’s opening-round 79, the Mississauga, Ontario, native put together consecutive counting rounds for the Wolfpack over the final 36 holes.
Baillargeon had three birdies and played each side at 1-over 37 on Saturday.
Junior Chad Day began the day in the top 25, but struggled on Saturday with a 7-over 79. He finished the regional tied for 50th at 7-over 223.
