New Orleans, La. - Junior Brooke Baker fired a two-over 74 Friday to lead the NC State women’s golf team into 13th place after round one of the LSU Tiger/Wave Classic at English Turn Golf & Country Club.
The Wolfpack shot a +18 (306) team score through 18 of the 54-hole event. The team is only six shots out of fourth place in a crowded field of 16-ranked teams.
Baker, first-year transfer from Tulsa, carded one birdie at the par-4 16th to make the turn at even-par. She gave a stroke back at Nos. 1 and 4, but still finished a steady round tied for 16th among a field of 124 competitors.
Sophomore Meghan Chapman’s round was bit more bumpy, but finished up nicely at +3 (75) and is tied for 26th. She went out at three-over after four bogeys and another birdie at No. 16. After a pair of bogeys at Nos. 1 and 5, she answered back with a birdie at the par-5 6th to finish up just one-over-par on her back nine.
Senior Emily Street was one back of Chapman with a four-over (76) to tie for 36th. She was one-under after a birdie at No. 12 and held that number until a double bogey at No. 18 left her +1 through nine holes. She wound up with three bogeys on the back.
Senior Kathleen Strandberg finished at +9 (81). She also birdied No. 12, a par-3, but eight bogeys and one double left her tied for 91st.
Freshman Amanda Baker struggled to an 82. She birdied the par-4 No. 4, but had trouble all day with six bogeys, one double and a triple on No. 9, the final hole of her round.
Alabama leads the field at +5 (293), followed by LSU (294) and Virginia (296).
Alabama’s Brooke Pancake and LSU’s Tessa Teachman are tied atop the leader board at -2 (70).
Second round action begins at 8 a.m., Saturday. Live stats are available at Golfstat.com
