Big WSU Inning Sinks Softball

Morgan Peeler (1-2) was handed the loss, allowing six earned runs. Stephanie Call started for the Pack and tossed the first 2.1 frames, and Linzy Rother got the final two outs in her pitching debut.
Sharon Palma (2-1) earned the win for the Raiders.
Call struggled with her control as WSU got a run in the top of the second, but it could’ve been worse. Jamie Perkins and China Frost singled back-to-back and moved to second and third on a Justine Shilt sac-bunt. Katie Kine and Lindsay Barrett then got hit by pitches in consecutive at-bats with one out, putting the Raiders up 1-0.
The Wolfpack bounced back in the bottom of the second, putting three runs on the board. Call doubled to lead off and Krystal Hawkins came on to run in her place, quickly moving to third on a Bridget Desbois groundout to second. Hawkins eventually scored on a Katie Mansilla bunt single back to the circle when Melanie Heyne’s errant late throw sailed way wide of first base.
Landon Warren later made it 3-1 Pack with a two-run double that hugged the line in left.
Wright State quickly tied things up in the top of the third with two runs. Kristen Bradshaw singled up the middle then scored from first on a Jamie Perkins double down the left field line. Frost followed with a single into right, and Perkins was able to score when Toni Ann Williford bobbled the ball. Call was then lifted for Peeler, who fanned the first two batters she faced to end the inning.
Call used her fourth bomb of the year to put NC State back on top 4-3 with a two-out solo shot in the bottom of the third.
The Pack averted disaster in the top of the fourth, as WSU loaded the bases with one out. But Peeler caught Bradshaw looking and Perkins grounded out to first as NC State escaped unharmed.
The Wolfpack offense tacked on another run in the bottom of the fifth as Alyssa Allbritten singled up the middle and Morgan Barbour came on to run in her place. Claudia Cooper followed with a base hit into center, and Barbour scored when Mollie Berry kicked the ball around in the outfield grass.
Bradshaw knotted the score at 5-all with one swing of her bat in the top of the sixth, belting a two-run double into the left-center gap.
A five-run top of the seventh put the Raiders ahead 10-5. WSU loaded the bases with three consecutive infield singles, and Bradshaw nailed Peeler in the leg with a line drive that ricocheted into left field and scored two runs. Frost and Justine Shilt later added RBI singles, and Bradshaw also scored on Frost’s single into right on another outfield error.
The Pack got a sixth run in the bottom of the seventh when Samantha Melton scored on a passed ball, but left the bases loaded to end the game.
NC will wrap up its stay at the La Quinta Inn & Suites Tournament tomorrow, Sunday, Feb. 21, with a 9 a.m. ball game against Michigan State.
