GREENSBORO, N.C. NC State finished fourth in the team standings and Lauren Doughtie tied for fifth individually at the ACC Women’s Golf Championship held at Sedgefield Country Club.
The 35th-ranked Wolfpack played outstanding all day and shot its best score of the three-day tournament with a 296 (+12) on Sunday at the par 71, 6,355-layout. It marks the best finish for the Pack in this event since tying for third in 2005.
Wake Forest (869, +17) led the entire tournament to cruise to a 24-shot victory over North Carolina (893, +41). Duke (894, +42) finished third, two shots ahead of NC State (896, +44).
Doughtie, in her last ACC Championship, finished tied for fifth overall after shooting three-over 74 on Sunday and finished the 54-hole tournament at +6 (74-71-74=219). She had one birdie and four bogeys in her final round.
For the third straight day, juniors Emily Street and Kathleen Strandberg shot identical scores. Unfortunately today was their worst score of the three with a five-over 76.
Street was in great position at just two-over-par after her second birdie of the day at No. 13, but she uncharacteristically tripled bogeyed the next hole her first big number all weekend long.
She pulled it together with another birdie at No. 15, but bogeyed the last hole to finish tied for 13th, her third straight top-20 finish in this event, at +11 (75-73-76=224)
Strandberg, the local from Greensboro, was in great shape making the turn at one-over, but four back-nine bogeys dropped her out of the top-10, but still played fine golf all weekend long.
She birdied the par-5 fifth hole for the second time this weekend to highlight her round.
Redshirt junior Joanna Saleeby made another big improvement over yesterday’s round by firing a four-over 75 on Sunday. After shooting 86 and 81 over the first 36 holes, the Raleigh, N.C., native played well today with 14 pars and four bogeys. She moved up seven spots on the leaderboard to place tied for 29th at +29 (86-81-75=242).
Freshman Meghan Chapman, who had to withdraw during Saturday’s second round, tied for the fourth-lowest round of the day with an even-par 71 and was crucial in keeping the Wolfpack in the hunt for a second-place finish all afternoon long.
Chapman was at her best down the stretch with three birdies in her final eight holes.
Wake Forest’s Natalie Sheary and Duke’s Amanda Blumenherst finished three days of golf atop the field tied at 214 (+1), but Sheary earned top honors by winning on the first playoff hole with a par at the par-5 18th.
NC State will now await word on an expected eighth straight NCAA Regional appearance that will take place May 7-9.
