First Round: Doughtie 4th, Wolfpack 9th at NCAA Regional
5/8/2008 12:00:00 AM | Women's Golf
AUSTIN, Texas All-ACC junior Lauren Doughtie is in fourth place after a three-under 69 to lead NC State into a tie for 9th place after day one at the 2008 Women’s Golf NCAA Central Regional at the University of Texas Golf Club.
The Wolfpack fired a team score of +12 (300) to tie with LSU and is only two shots out of seventh place. The top eight clubs advance to the NCAA Championship.
Doughtie had a magnificent afternoon that featured an eagle at the par-5 5th hole and three more birdies, which puts her alone in fourth place among a field of 108 competitors. The Suffolk, Va., native had the best round of the golfers that had afternoon tee times and tied the old course record that was broken by three others today.
It appeared she would become the third player in program history to shoot 68, but a bogey at the home hole tied her career-best effort set earlier this year at the LSU/Cleveland Golf Classic.
The Wolfpack started out on fire on the front nine during its afternoon round. A combined eight birdies and one eagle on the front saw the Pack move all the way to five-under and into a tie with No. 3 UCLA for the lead.
After gradually giving back a few strokes, NC State still had a great round going halfway through the back nine with the Pack holding onto fourth place at one-over. But the final five holes proved very tough as the red and white slowly slipped back into the middle of the 21-team standings.
Senior Stephanie Derrey enjoyed a steady round on Thursday with a one-over 73 to tie for 18th overall. Similar to most of the Wolfpack golfers today, she started out very well with a pair of birdies on the front nine and was at 2 (34) at the turn. The only blemishes on the Paris, France, natives round were three bogeys on No. 10, 13 and 17.
Sophomore Emily Street is tied for 66th after a six-over 78. The native of Forest City, N.C., traded two birdies and two bogeys on the front nine to go out at even-par 36. But she fell into a rut by posting bogey on four straight holes to begin her back nine and a later double on the par-3 16th set her back after a nice start that saw her birdie both the opening hole and the par-5 9th hole.
Freshman Julie Saleeby finished her first day of action tied for 81st with an eight-over 80. She truly had a tale of two totally different front and back nine’s. The Raleigh native came out smoking with three birdies on the front nine to make the turn at 2 (34). However, three bogeys, one double bogey and a 10 on the par-5 14th made a distant memory of her fine beginning to her round.
Older-sister, sophomore, Joanna Saleeby also struggled on the back nine and wound up tied for 91st at +10 (82).
UCLA’s Maria Jose Uribe, the reigning U.S. Amateur Champion, leads the field after a blistering 7 (65). Purdue’s Maria Hernandez aced the par-3 2nd hole and is one-shot back at 6 (66). TCU’s Valentine Derrey, the younger sister of NC State’s Stephanie Derrey, is third at 5 (67).
UCLA leads the field at 5 (283), followed by TCU at 3 (285) and Purdue at even-par (288).
Day two of the 54-hole tournament continues Friday morning.
