Doughtie 8th, Golf Team Places 9th at Cougar Classic

HANAHAN, S.C. Junior Lauren Doughtie posted her third career top-10 and the 36th-ranked NC State women’s golf team finished ninth among a competitive field of 10 ranked teams at the season-opening Cougar Classic at Yeamans Hall Club.
After recording the second best team score yesterday, the Pack fell off the pace with a +19 (307) during today’s final round to finish +28 (294-291-307=892) for the 54-hole tournament.
Doughtie, a junior from Suffolk, Va., shot a 75 today after recording consecutive 71’s over the first two days of action. She wound up tied for eighth at +1 (71-71-75=217) with her best career 54-hole score,
During today’s round, Doughtie traded two birdies and two bogeys over her first nine holes, but four bogeys in a five-hole stretch set her back from contending for medalist honors after beginning the day tied for fifth among 102 golfers.
Sophomore Emily Street wound up tied for 17th at +3 (70-75-74=219), which was also a 54-hole career low score for the Forest City, N.C., native. She had a rather steady round on Tuesday with 14 pars, one birdie and three bogeys.
Senior Stephanie Derrey shot a six-over 78 during the final round to finish tied for 31st at +7 (74-71-78=223), which was only one-shot off her career best mark for a 54-hole tournament.
Freshman Julie Saleeby finished tied for 73rd in her first collegiate tournament at +19 (79-76-80=235). Her round today was highlighted by two birdies and seven pars.
Sophomore Kathleen Strandberg finished her roller coaster event with an 80 today to place in a tie for 83rd at +22 (84-74-80=238). She got off to a great start with a birdie on her second hole of the day and was at even par after eight holes, but struggled the remainder of the round.
Notre Dame won the event at +3 (870), one shot over Tennessee, while Texas, Alabama and LSU rounded out the top-five.
Notre Dame’s Lisa Maunu earned medalist honors with a 6 (210).
NC State returns to action at the Lady Tar Heel event at the University of North Carolina’s Finley Golf Course. The 54-hole tournament runs Friday, October 5 through Sunday, October 7 in Chapel Hill.
