PINEHURST, N.C. – Led by freshman Kathleen Strandberg’s fourth place overall finish, the NC State women’s golf team wound up second at the 2007 Pinehurst Challenge at the par 72, 5,978-yard Pinehurst #8 layout.
The Wolfpack and East Carolina actually tied for first but based on the fifth player's scorecard on each team, ECU was declared the winner as Emelie Lind’s 80 topped Nancy Mountcastle’s 84.
NC State's team total of 301 on Tuesday was the lowest score by any of the 17 teams over the 36 holes of competition. The Pack also led with 20 birdies over the two-days.
Strandberg posted her second straight four-over-par 76 to place in a career-best tie for fourth at +8 (76-76=152). The Greensboro, N.C. native had three birdies in her round for the second straight day.
Sara Wikstrom of Arkansas-Little Rock and Lene Krog of East Carolina took Co-Medallist honors with identical five-over 149 (75-74=149) scores over the 36-hole tournament.
Freshman Emily Street shot a three-over 75 on Tuesday to finish tied for sixth overall at +9 (78-75=153). Like Standberg, it was Street’s best finish in her second career tournament. Street did most of her damage on par 3 holes, leading all 90 competitors with a -2 score.
Sophomore Lauren Doughtie and junior Stephanie Derrey both shot identical +10 (79-75=154) scores to tie for 12th place.
Mountcastle finished tied for 64th with a +21 (81-84=165) two-day total.
NC State returns to action at the LSU/Cleveland Golf Classic on March 16-18 at The University Club in Baton Rouge, La., the site of this years’ NCAA East Regional.
