RALEIGH, N.C. NC State had its game-tying goal waved off in the final second of regulation and Duke came away with a 1-0 win on Sunday afternoon in Atlantic Coast Conference women’s soccer action at Method Road Stadium.
The Blue Devils (8-3-1, 2-1 ACC) got an unassisted goal midway through the first half by Rebecca Allen that wound up being the difference in the hard-fought, back-and-forth league match.
NC State (5-4-2, 0-3 ACC) never stopped fighting after falling behind. Briana Cunningham nearly sent the contest into overtime when she sent a shot from at least 40 yards out over the head of Duke goalie Allison Lipsher into the back of the net with less than a second left in the game.
However, the referee ruled that the final horn sounded before the ball went over the outstretched arms of Lipsher and the Blue Devils escaped with the win.
NC State was on the attack in the 22nd minute when Lindsay Vera and Chantalle Dugas setup Nadia Aboulhosn with a great scoring opportunity. Aboulhosn was one-on-one with the goalie and sent a shot that hugged the ground towards the right corner that Lipsher was able to corral.
Midway through the second half, Aboulhosn was again penetrating the Blue Devil defense in the 60th minute when she rang a shot from a difficult angle off the cross bar.
Pack set piece specialist Katie Ruiz gave the team a handful of scoring opportunities throughout the match. She continually sent her kicks into the box and twice Jessica O'Rourke got a head on her passes, but they were ultimately cleared by the Duke defense.
Sidney Little had five saves in net for the Wolfpack, while Lipsher two saves for the Blue Devils.
NC State will host Virginia on Thursday at 4 pm at Method Road.
