
Track Completes Weekend at Duke Twilight

Raleigh, N.C. - The NC State track and field squads had a busy weekend of action, sending athletes to both Clemson and Duke. Despite the heavy rain on Sunday, which forced a bunch of events to be cancelled at the Duke Twilight, NC State came away with more top times and marks on the season in preparation for the NCAA Regional Championships in a few weeks.
On the men's side, Mitchell Pope recorded yet another NCAA Regional mark in the shot put. Pope won the event, with a season-best mark of 60'07.75". Also in the shot put, Chris Crawford finished second with a toss of 52'11.50". The Pack also brought home the top-two finishes in the 5,000 meters. Tibor Vegh won the race in 14:36.95, and Bryce Ruiz was second in 14:45.21.
On the women's side at the Duke Twilight, the Pack had a strong showing in the 5,000 meters. Anne Wheatly finished in second place with a time of 17:19.29, she was followed by Michele Popple in third (17:24.42) and Ginger Wheeler in fourth (17:28.75). Also in that race, Abigail Nelkie was sixth and Elena Helmerick was eighth. Georgia Davis also ran the 1,500 meters in 4:44.68.
On Saturday, NC State send its sprinters down to Clemson to compete in the Orange & Purple Classic. In the women's 100 meters, Joya Rodgers finished eight (12.24), Ebony Foster returned to action and was 14th (12.37), and Cassandra Williams was 17th (12.46). Williams also placed seventh in the 200 meters with a time of 24.67.
On the men's side, freshman Reggie Reese had a strong day, placing seventh in the 100 meters (10.76) and sixth in the 200 meters (22.07). Steve Gardner finished seventh in the 400 meters with a time of 49.16. Kevin Hutton was sixth in the 400 meter hurdles (53.01) and 13th in the 100 meters (11.11).
Next weekend, the track and field squads get one final chance to qualifying for the NCAA Regional Championships. NC State will be sending athletes to both Georgia Tech and North Carolina A&T.
