
Gymnastics Blasts No. 23 Michigan State

Raleigh, N.C. - The NC State gymnastics team easily defeated No. 23 Michigan State and put together its top home performance this season. The Wolfpack (12-5) outpaced the Spartans by a score of 195.100-192.650. NC State posted a season-high team score on floor, as four Pack gymnasts scored at least a 9.8. In addition, NC State won the individual title on all four events as well, with sophomore Leigha Hancock taking top honors on beam and tying for first on floor.
The Pack would start the meet out on vault, and came away with a team score of 48.675. Junior Rachel Katz was the top performer for NC State with her 9.85 for a first place showing, her third vault title of the year. Sophomore Leigha Hancock had a 9.775 and was third, while junior Katie Ozburn was fifth with her 9.7. Rounding out the scoring for NC State was sophomore Heather Zolton and freshman Dru Davis each with a 9.675.
NC State also had a strong routine on bars, with a matching team score of 48.675 and sweeping the top-three spots. Junior Amanda Jones posted NC State's top score with a 9.8 for first bars title of the season. Zolton came away with a second place finish with her 9.75, and freshman Elyse Adams and Kylah Bachman each had a 9.725 and tied for third. Katz scored a 9.675 for the final score.
Over on beam, the Pack put together a team score of 48.625. Hancock had a near flawless routine and had a season-high score of 9.875 for her first beam title of the season. Bachman was close behind in second place with her 9.85. Zolton scored a 9.775 and was third. Davis had a 9.6 and Ozburn a 9.525 for round out the scoring.
The Wolfpack ended the meet strong with its top team score of the day, a season-high 49.125 on floor. Hancock and freshman Ashley Shepard tied for the floor title each notching a 9.9. Zolton was close behind in third with her 9.875, while Bachman placed fourth with a 9.8. Davis had a 9.65 as well.
In the all-around, Heather Zolton scored a 39.075 for first place honors, followed closely by Kylah Bachman in second with a 38.975.
NC State will be on the road next weekend, traveling to George Washington for a meet on Saturday, March 11. The Wolfpack returns for the final home meet of the season on Friday, March 17 playing host to George Washington, Maryland and New Hampshire.
