
Gymnastics Starts Season With Win

Raleigh, N.C. - The NC State gymnastics team defeated both Brown and William & Mary Friday night in the home opener for the Wolfpack at Reynolds Coliseum. NC State took top honors with a team score of 191.250, followed closely by William & Mary in second (191.200) and Brown (185.625). The Wolfpack (2-0) claimed the top-three spots on both vault and beam, but had to count falls on both bars and floor.
The Wolfpack started the night out on vault, and came away with a score of 48.050. Senior Molly Pennington picked up where she left off last season, and claimed her fifth career vault title with a 9.7. Classmate Leah Sabo and sophomore Kylah Bachman each turned in strong scores of 9.675 and tied for second. A pair of freshmen made their debuts for NC State, with Rachel Katz scoring a 9.6 and Katie Ozburn scoring a 9.4.
NC State struggled on bars, notching only one score over 9.5 and having an overall team score of 46.775. Sabo was NC State's top finisher with her score of 9.675 for third place. Fellow senior Marlyn Madey posted a score of 9.45 and was seventh. Bachman and junior Kelley Kello each had a 9.25 and tied for ninth. Senior Cheryl Potacco posted a 9.15.
The Wolfpack came back strong on beam with a team score of 48.450. Junior Andrea Petrocelli turned in an impressive score with her 9.825 for her first career beam title. Classmate Cori Goldstein was close behind with her 9.8 for second place. Sabo also scored strong once again, a 9.75 for third place. Rounding out the scoring was Kello with a 9.625 and senior Alison Bundy with a 9.45.
NC State closed the night on floor with a 47.975, having to count two falls. Bachman notched the Pack's top score, a 9.825 for second place. Sabo and Kello each had a 9.8 and tied each other for fourth, while Bundy and Madey each scored a 9.275 to finish the scoring.
Competing in the all-around for NC State was Sabo and Bachman. Sabo, won the all-around with her score of 38.900, while Bachman competed in the all-around for the first time and scored a 37.550.
NC State will next embark on a five-meet road trip. The Wolfpack will return to Reynolds on February 13, when NC State hosts the Hearts Invitational.
