
Gymnastics Earns High Score on Road

Pittsburgh, Pa. - The NC State gymnastics team came away with an impressive score of 193.850 in its first road meet of the 2004 season. The host, No. 25 Pittsburgh won the three team meet with a score of 194.300, with NC State finishing second, and James Madison taking third (185.450). The Wolfpack (3-1) was extremely strong on vault and beam, but struggled on bars and floor.
NC State recorded a score of 49.150 on vault, the third-highest vaulting score in school history, and in the process claimed the top three spots on the awards podium. Senior Molly Pennington won her second straight vault title with a career-best 9.925. Freshman Rachel Katz was close behind in second with a score of 9.875. Sophomore Kylah Bachman and senior Leah Sabo each scored a 9.85 and tied for third, both setting new career-highs in the process. Rounding out the vault for the Wolfpack was freshman Katie Ozburn and senior Cheryl Potacco tying each other for 11th with scores of 9.65.
For the second straight week, NC State scored well on beam, with a meet-best team score of 48.725. Junior Andrea Petrocelli won her second straight beam title of the young season with her score of 9.825. Sabo was close behind in second with her score of 9.8. Bachman took fourth with her 9.775 for fourth. Rounding out the scoring were seniors Alison Bundy (9.725) and Mary Freyvogel (9.6).
On the Pack's two remaining events, NC State scored a 48.375 on floor and a 47.600 on bars. Sabo won her first even title of the season on floor, with a score of 9.925. Junior Cori Goldstein also had a high finish, taking third with a 9.85. Also in the top-10 on floor were Bachman with a 9.775 for seventh and senior Marlyn Madey in 10th with a 9.675. On bars, Bachman notched her third top-five finish with her 9.725 for fourth. Seniors Madey and Potacco each posted a 9.65 and tied for sixth.
In the all-around Bachman scored a personal-best 39.125 and was second, while Sabo's 38.175 was good for third.
NC State will make a quick turnaround and compete at West Virginia with No. 21 Ohio State this Sunday at 2:00 p.m.
