COLUMBIA, S.C. - NC State women's soccer (5-2-1) fell to host South Carolina (4-3-1), 1-0 on Sunday, Sept. 21. Freshman forward M.A. Foster scored the Gamecocks' winning goal at 67:23.
The first half was played midfield for both teams, although the Wolfpack saw perhaps the most time in scoring territory, at least until the final two minutes. Both teams recorded five shots with NC State taking two on goal. Senior forward Adrienne Barnes and freshman midfielder Carol Tognetti each had a chance to score, but South Carolina's keeper, redshirt-senior Elise Matthews made two saves to keep NC State scoreless for the first half. Barnes saw her ball pushed over the bar, while Tognetti's header on the right post was caught after a terrific throw-in from freshman defender Megan Buescher. The Gamecocks had a few scoring chances as well, created especially in the final minutes. Freshman defender Shelly Hoddeson took a shot inside the penalty box and pushed it just to the right of the post.
The second half saw a much more aggressive USC scoring attack. With its six shots, the Gamecocks made sure to put NC State's freshman goalkeeper Megan Connors to work. Connors took on two shots and made one save. The Wolfpack's offensive effort came up short despite a very aggressive front with senior forward Lindsey Underwood and junior forward Erin Griswold each inking three shots. The tandem worked together on several shot attempts but resulted in either a save or a just outside of the posts. USC's keeper Matthews collected another two saves, including a header from Griswold on the right post.
Overall, NC State outshot South Carolina 13-11, including an 8-6 edge in the second half. The Pack also had a 5-2 advantage in corner kicks.
NC State heads home to host Virginia on Friday, Sept. 26, 4 p.m. at Method Road.
