
Men's DMR Squad Wins Conference Crown

Chapel Hill, N.C. - After one day of competition, the NC State men's track and field squad sits in fourth place with 11 points, while the women's team is in sixth place with 19 points. Florida State was the leader after the first day for the men with 39 points, while Georgia Tech was the top women's squad with 39.5 points.
The NC State men's squad won the distance medley relay to close out today's action. The team of David Christian, Monterrio Adams, Jesse Rhodenbaugh, and Kurtis Marlowe won the DMR in 9:57.07 and were crowned conference champions. Also run today was the finals of the 5000 meters. David Patterson, the reigning ACC Performer of the Week, was NC State's top finisher in the race bringing home All-ACC honors with his third place finish in 14:22.59. Also in that race, Devin Swann was seventh (14:44.62) and John Henderson was 18th (15:19.61). In the field event finals, Manny Lawson finished sixth in the long jump with a mark of 23'03.50". Randy Cass was 10th in the shot put with a top throw of 47'02.25".
Derrick High had a good showing in the prelims for both the 200 and 400 meters, qualifying for the finals in both events. High placed second in both races, finishing the 200 meters in 21.88 and the 400 meters in 48.39. TJ Giwa will also run in the finals of the 200 meters tomorrow, he was fifth (22.06). Giwa did not qualify for the finals of the 60 meters, finishing ninth with a time of 6.94. Monterrio Adams placed 12th in the 400 meters with a time of 49.83. Two NC State runners reached the finals in the mile, Nick Mangum was fifth (4:12.78) and Ricky Brookshire was sixth (4:15.31) in the prelims. Along with his sixth place finish in the long jump, Lawson also took 11th in the 60 meter hurdles (8.41).
Kristin Price was crowned ACC Champion in the 5,000 meters for the second straight year, and in the process ran a NCAA automatic time of 16:09.80. Also in the 5,000 meters it was Beth Fonner in seventh (16:54.23) and Josie Lauber in 12th (17:19.47). The distance medley relay team of Erin Swain, Nasheena Quick, Janelle Vadnais, and Jennifer Modliszewski was sixth with a time of 12:12.23.
In the field event finals for the women, Kelly Smoke finished seventh in the shot put with a top throw of 45'08.50". Sheena Dawkins also brought home a seventh place finish with hers in the long jump (18'10.50"). In the high jump, April Goolsby was 11th (5'01.75") and Katie Phelan took 16th (4'11.75"). Allison Weavil was 13th in the pole vault clearing 10'11.75".
Both Felicia Fant and Ebony Foster qualified for two of the sprint finals tomorrow. Foster ran the fastest time of the day in the prelims of the 60 meter hurdles, turning in NCAA provisional time of 8.40. Foster will also run in the finals of the 200 meters tomorrow after her third place finish today (24.57). Fant finished seventh in the prelims of the 60 meters with a time of 7.62, and was fourth in the 200 meters (24.64). Janelle Vadnais qualified for the finals in the mile with her 10th place finish (4:58.96). Adrianne Adams took 25th in the 200 meters (26.22). In the 800 meters, Karen Medlin was 12th (2:21.00) and Jill Nelson was 17th (2:27.72). Leslie Jimison finished 18th in the mile (5:18.45). Nasheena Quick was 16th in the 60 meter hurdles (9.10) and Krystal Neely was 18th (9.30).
The ACC Championships will resume tomorrow beginning at 10:00 a.m with the field events, while the running events begin at 1:00 p.m.
