RALEIGH, N.C. - Led by junior forward Erin Griswold's two goals, the NC State women's soccer team downed Navy 3-0 at Method Road Soccer Stadium Monday afternoon. Freshman goalkeeper Megan Connors made three saves for her second shutout of the season as the Wolfpack improved to 7-4-1 overall. Navy (9-2-1) came into the contest allowing only seven goals all season, but NC State scored three times on Navy netminder Kim Bonafede.
Griswold's first goal of the game came in the 35th minute and was off of a ball from senior forward Lindsey Underwood, who notched her sixth assist of the season. Underwood fed the ball from the right side to Griswold, who moved towards the front of the net before kicking the ball deep into the lower left corner past the diving Bonafede. Bonafede came into the contest with a 0.63 goals against average, allowing only seven goals over the first 11 games for Navy.
The Wolfpack would take a 1-0 lead into the half, as NC State continued to play aggressive and held Navy to only three shots in the first half. The second half would be more of the same, as NC State scored twice in a twenty minute stretch to put the game away.
"I was very happy with how we played. We switched between two styles of play to make us a stronger team and it showed," head coach Laura Kerrigan said. "We played hard and smart out there, and if we play like that we are very capable of beating any team in the nation."
In the second stanza, NC State and Griswold stayed aggressive, and the Wolfpack would go up 2-0 after her second goal at 60:24. The ball bounced around in the box as the Navy defense tried to control the ball, and Griswold took a high ball off a rebound and put it in the back of the net for her team-leading eighth goal of the season.
Less than 20 minutes later, the Wolfpack would strike again as senior forward Adrienne Barnes took a long ball deep into the right corner from junior forward Anna Helenius, who picked up her second assist on the season. Barnes notched her fourth assist of the season as she drove a ball towards the near post. Bonafede came over to make a play on the ball, but she couldn't grab it as sophomore Lydia McBath gave the Wolfpack a 3-0 lead by netting her second goal of the season and the third of her career.
NC State will travel to Chapel Hill on Friday, Oct. 10 for a conference matchup with No. 1 North Carolina at 7 p.m.
