CHAPEL HILL, N.C. - NC State women's soccer fell to host No. 1 North Carolina, 4-1 on Friday, Oct. 10. The Wolfpack drops to 7-5-1 and 0-3 in the Atlantic Coast Conference, while the Tar Heels improve to 13-0-0 and 3-0 in the ACC. Senior forward Adrienne Barnes scored the lone goal for the Pack, while sophomore midfielder Kasey White tabbed two for UNC.
NC State's defense was put to the test against UNC as the Heels accumulated 28 shots, including 14 on goal. The Wolfpack keeper, freshman Megan Connors, recorded a career-high 10 saves in the process. NC State was held to three corner kicks but took advantage of one late in the second half to score its only goal. Junior Anna Helenius took a right side corner in the 86th minute, which landed at the foot of Barnes who was waiting in the box. The goal was her second of the season and was the third assist for Helenius.
For UNC, sophomore forward Lindsay Tarpley, the team's leading scorer, started things off with a goal in the 33rd minute. The Tar Heel finished with a game-high eight shots. The goal was scored only after NC State's freshman defender, Megan Buescher had saved an earlier shot by sophomore midfielder Kasey White. The Wolfpack continued to hold the Heels to a 1-0 lead heading into halftime.
The second half resulted in much of the same offensive pressure from North Carolina. Freshman defender Jessica Maxwell netted her first career goal seven minutes into the second half off a header in the box. White, who had been stopped short of a goal earlier in the match, sought revenge and scored UNC's final two goals. Her first goal came off a pass from Tarpley on the right side in the 70th minute. White's second goal was scored 10 minutes later off an assist from junior forward Mary McDowell. UNC's keeper senior Aly Winget made one save on a shot from NC State's sophomore midfielder Lindsey DeLorenze early in the first half.
NC State will host No. 14 Duke on Wednesday, Oct. 15, 7 p.m., at SAS Soccer Stadium in Cary, N.C.
