Women's Soccer Falls to No. 14 Duke

CARY, N.C. - NC State women's soccer fell to visiting Duke, 3-1 on Wednesday, Oct. 15. The Wolfpack falls to 7-6-1 and 0-4 in the Atlantic Coast Conference, while the Blue Devils improve to 9-4-1 and 2-2 in the ACC. Duke's game-winning goal was scored by freshman midfielder Darby Kroyer, which was her third of the year. NC State's lone goal was tallied by freshman midfielder Mandela Schumacher-Hodge.
Duke controlled most of the first half, earning four corner kicks and tallying six shots. NC State was held to two shots, one coming from the toe of sophomore midfielder Lindsey DeLorenze that hit off the cross bar. NC State's freshman keeper Megan Connors collected three saves, while the Blue Devils' senior netminder Thora Helgadottir stopped two. Kroyer's goal came in the 37th minute when sophomore midfielder Shelly Marshall passed to Kroyer waiting at 15 yards center in the box.
The second half played much more to the feet of the Wolfpack. NC State outshot the Blue Devils, eight to six. Junior midfielder Anna Helenius passed to Schumacher-Hodge who was positioned 20 yards out on the right side. She struck the ball to the left side of the net. Duke split time in between the posts, having Helgadottir through most of the second half. Junior Kate Straka came in with 17 minutes remaining. She made three saves and allowed one goal as the Pack put on an offensive attack. Overall, Connors finished with seven saves and allowed three goals.
NC State will host Maryland on Sunday, Oct. 19, at Method Road. Kick-off is set for 1 p.m. The game will precede the men's game against No. 4 North Carolina at 3:30 p.m.
