
Wolfpack Women Lead Pine Needles Collegiate Through Two Rounds

Southern Pines, N.C. - Co-host NC State moved to the top of the leader board in the second round of play at the Pine Needles Collegiate on Monday in Southern Pines, N.C. An 11-team field took to the par 71, 6,017 course at 8:30 a.m. with a shot-gun start commencing play. NC State sophomore Colby Cobb is tied for third with UNC's Ashley Prange at 147. Both are one stroke behind Tar Heel co-leaders Abby Spector and Meghan Adams. The Wolfpack (593) shot a round of 303 to sit three strokes behind Baylor in the first round before charging to the head of the pack with a 290 to take a three stroke lead over UNC (596) after 36 holes.
Colby Cobb had a solid performance for NC State, scoring three-over on the day with rounds of 74 and 73. She and Sarah Bonner topped the field with seven birdies Monday. Bonner is tied for fifth, just two strokes behind the leaders.
Briana Vega moved into the top 10 in the second round after recovering from a rough start on the front nine in the first round. She recovered on the backside, scoring 35, one-under on the back. Vega charged into the number seven spot with a brilliant one-over par 72 in the second round to finish at 150 after two rounds. Courtney Pomeranz is tied with Vega and two others. Pomeranz had rounds of 76 and 74. Erica Wein was consistent on the course, scoring 76 in both rounds for a 152.
NC State individuals Lorraine Ballerano (162) and Margaux Hennessey (164) are tied for 45th and 48th respectively.
Two competitors, Sabrina Gassner of Rollins College and Rebecca Rogers of Notre Dame, fired eagles. In the first round, Gassner needed only three shots on the 10th hole, a par five, 458 yard pin. Rogers took three shots in the second round on hole 14, a par five at 455 yards.
Miami's Tina Miller had the lowest round of the day with a 67 in the second round. Miller shot four-under on the back nine with five birdies. She is tied for fifth.
The final round of play will begin at 8:30 a.m. Tuesday with a shot-gun start. NC State is co-hosting the tournament with Rollins College, the alma mater of women's golf legend Peggy Kirk Bell. Bell, the course owner, was a member of the 1950 Curtis Cup team. A founding member of the LPGA in 1951, she played the tour for more than a decade, until she settled down with her husband to teach golf and raise their three children at Pine Needles.
