CHARLOTTE, N.C. – NC State gymnastics sophomore Syniya Thomas has been named ACC Gymnast of the Week for week six, as announced by the conference Tuesday afternoon. The honor marks her second weekly award of the season, after earning Specialist of the Week recognition in week two and is the first Gymnast of the Week award of her career.
Thomas is coming off a career performance in the Wolfpack's 197.125-196.525 upset victory over rival No. 12 North Carolina on Sunday, Feb. 8, at Reynolds Coliseum. The Raleigh, N.C., native recorded a career-high 9.975 on floor, tying for the second-best floor score in program history and posting the highest score by a Pack gymnast this season. Her routine helped propel NC State to a 49.450 team score on floor, tied for the fifth-highest floor mark in program history.
Thomas also set a career high on beam, scoring a 9.875 to lead the Pack to its best beam score of the season (49.200). Her performances on beam and floor accounted for her team-leading fourth and fifth event wins of the year and helped NC State post its first team score of 197.000 or higher this season. The Wolfpack's 197.125 total against UNC is tied for the sixth-best score in program history.
On the season, Thomas leads the Pack with five event wins and has recorded three scores of 9.900 or higher. With this week's honor, she now owns four career ACC weekly awards, including one Gymnast of the Week, one Specialist of the Week, and two Newcomer of the Week recognitions.
NC State will compete in its first multi-meet weekend of the season, beginning at No. 13 North Carolina on Friday, Feb. 13, before traveling to Fort Worth, Texas, for the Metroplex Challenge on Sunday, Feb. 15.
